Sports arena with an Olympic past receives Natural Ventilation and Smoke Vent solution from D+H

The winner of the D+H Golden Atmosphere Award 2022 is the D+H sales and service partner EBSA from Australia. The project "Ken Rosewall Arena - Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre" was equipped with solutions for Controlled Natural Ventilation (CNV) and Smoke and Heat Exhaust Ventilation (SHEV).

Built for the tennis competitions of the Olympic Games in 2000, the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre is still a place for great sport years after this competition. The Ken Rosewall Arena, as the central stadium, has been converted into a multi-purpose arena as part of a modernisation commissioned by Tennis NSW. In addition to ATP-level tennis, netball will now be played in the 10,000-plus capacity building. The remodelling includes innovations in seating, lighting, video boards, as well as a new sound system and removable flooring to accommodate netball events in addition to tennis. The most visible innovation from the outside is the roof, which can be closed if necessary.

The newly designed tent-like roof with an area of about 8000 square metres ensures that the arena can be used in all weather conditions. It covers the entire arena and is a construction of cables and PTFE fabric that allows natural light to pass through to the interior. This new construction replaces the previous solution with a perimeter-only roof. For this reason, ventilation and fire protection also had to be rethought.

D+H's Australian partner EBSA was commissioned to provide a system that would offer both players and spectators the comfort of a well-ventilated sports arena. A natural ventilation solution with 34 thermally broken louvres and two thermally broken operable access hatches (doors) in the pop-up oculus provide a natural ventilation and smoke relief solution for the centre.

EBSA developed and delivered a turnkey solution. With the installation of a louvre system, a CPS-M smoke control panel and ZA louvre actuators (drives), the company participated in this exceptional project. The integration of ACB technology enables digital communication between the louvre actuators (drives) and the Building Management System (BMS). An additional remote access gateway can eliminate the need for a technician to visit the site. The gateway enables real-time monitoring and functional checks of each individual drive via secure cloud server.
